my simple daily habits
Being a homemaker means your work is never really “done.” There’s always another load of laundry waiting, another dish in the sink, and a little person asking for a snack five minutes after you’ve cleaned up lunch. It can be overwhelming if I let it, so I’ve learned that having a few simple daily habits helps me feel grounded and in control, even when the day feels chaotic.
Here are the things I do every single day to keep my sanity intact:
1. Make the Bed
It might seem small, but this one sets the tone for my entire day. Making the bed feels like I’ve already accomplished something before I’ve even had my coffee. It’s a visual reminder that order is possible — and it makes the whole room feel calmer. Plus, crawling into a neatly made bed at night just feels better.
2. Start a Load of Laundry
Laundry can easily pile up and feel impossible to catch up on. I’ve learned that doing at least one load a day keeps it manageable. I usually start it in the morning and switch it over when I get a spare minute. Folding might happen later (or much later), but keeping that rhythm helps the house run smoother.
3. Run the Dishwasher Every Night
No matter how tired I am, I make sure the dishwasher runs before bed. Waking up to a clean kitchen makes mornings so much easier — I can start breakfast and reset the day without the clutter of yesterday staring back at me.
4. Feed the Sourdough Starter
Tending to my sourdough starter has become a little ritual — something simple and quiet that connects me to slower living. It reminds me that good things take time, care, and patience. Plus, there’s something deeply satisfying about baking with something you’ve nurtured yourself.
5. Get Dressed (Even on the Hard Days)
It’s tempting to stay in pajamas when you’re home all day, but getting dressed — even in something simple — shifts my mindset. I feel more productive and more like me. Some days, that’s jeans and a cozy sweater; other days, it’s leggings and a messy bun. It’s not about looking perfect — it’s about showing up for the day with intention.
These little habits don’t seem like much, but together they create a rhythm that keeps my home (and my mind) from falling into chaos. They’re anchors in the ever-changing tide of motherhood and homemaking — small things that help me stay centered, grateful, and sane.
